Zaccheroni spurns interested suitors

Rome — Japan coach Alberto Zaccheroni said he has turned down a handful of offers for his services to steer the Blue Samurai to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, according to an interview Monday in Italian daily Repubblica.

"I had offers from three different national teams and one from a foreign club but turned all of them down," said Zaccheroni, who has one year left on his contract with the Asian champions.

Zaccheroni guided Japan to a record fourth Asian Cup in January and has yet to lose since beginning his reign with a shock 1-0 win over Argentina last October.

Japan kicks off its bid to reach Brazil in September and Zaccheroni has picked out Australia, which Japan beat in the Asian Cup final, among teams to be wary of in Asian qualifying.

"There are 94 national teams in Asia and the qualifiers have already begun. For me, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Australia are the teams we have to watch out for."
