Hurricanes surprise Caps

RALEIGH, North Carolina — Jussi Jokinen scored when the Carolina Hurricanes were both up and down a man. That kind of production made their special teams seem, well, pretty special.

Jokinen had two goals and Cam Ward made 23 saves for his 18th career shutout in the Hurricanes' 3-0 victory over the Washington Capitals on Friday night.

Jiri Tlusty added a late goal and Eric Staal had two assists, including the early hustle play that led to Carolina's eighth short-handed goal of the season.

The Hurricanes, who entered in last place in the Southeast Division, beat the first-place Capitals for the first time this season and defeated them in regulation at home for the first time in more than two years.

"It's a huge thing for us. We still feel our division is wide open, and our best chance to make the playoffs is to win the division," Jokinen said. "Obviously, that's a huge feeling. . . . I hope we can keep climbing up."

Tomas Vokoun stopped 30 shots for Washington, which had won four of five and entered 8-0-1 in its last nine against Carolina. The Capitals were 0-for-3 on the power play while the Hurricanes had two goals with the man advantage plus the short-handed one, leading new coach Dale Hunter to conclude that special teams were the difference in this one.

"Our power play gave up more chances than we got," he said.

Ward earned his fourth career shutout against Washington. He was impenetrable in his second shutout of the season and first since blanking Chicago in October.

His best save might have come midway through the second period, when he froze while making a pretty glove save on Mathieu Perreault's slap shot, perhaps unsure of whether he actually had the puck.

"I thought we worked our butts off and played a solid 60-minute game," Ward said. "It's a tough team to play against. They play a different style now. They're looking for that low-scoring (game), not their traditional 6-5 games in the past. You've got to be careful because you're not doing a whole lot of work, but they've got a ton of skill over there, and we were sharp all night."

Blackhawks 3, Panthers 1

In Chicago, Patrick Kane ended a seven-game goal drought and set up linemate Jonathan Toews' breakaway score in a victory over Florida.

Defenseman Duncan Keith added his first goal in 30 games to help the Blackhawks take the NHL lead, a point ahead of Detroit. Chicago has won three straight and is 5-0-1 in its last six games.

Ray Emery made 18 saves, allowing only Jason Garrison's power-play goal 43 seconds into the third period.

The Panthers dropped their eighth straight on the road and slipped to 1-3-3 in their last seven overall. Toews, who leads Chicago with 27 goals, has goals in four straight games and extended his points streak to six games. Kane's goal was his second in 14 games.

The game started a little over a half-hour late, at 8:08 p.m., because of snow. The announced attendance at the 20,500-seat United Center was 21,555, but about 2,000 seats remained empty.

The Panthers' bus from their downtown hotel arrived at the arena at about 6:45 p.m.

Five Florida players who were on Chicago's 2010 Stanley Cup championship team — defenseman Brian Campbell and forwards Tomas Kopecky, Kris Versteeg, John Madden and Jack Skille — skated against their former club.

Penguins 5, Canadiens 4 (SO)

In Pittsburgh, Evgeni Malkin scored in his fifth straight game and added the lone goal in the shootout to give the Penguins their fifth straight victory.

Malkin capped a two-goal third-period rally with his 25th of the season with 2:43 left in regulation. The NHL scoring leader then beat Peter Budaj in the shootout.

Dustin Jeffrey scored twice and added an assist for Pittsburgh, and Kris Letang had a goal and an assist. Marc-Andre Fleury overcame a shaky start to finish with 25 saves.

Andrei Kostitsyn and Erik Cole each had a goal and an assist for Montreal. Lars Eller and Max Pacioretty also scored, and Budaj made 34 saves.

Lightning 2, Stars 1

In Dallas, Teddy Purcell scored twice, and Mathieu Garon made 27 saves to help Tampa Bay beat the Stars.

Purcell carried the puck from the right circle into the slot and backhanded a shot past goalie Kari Lehtonen at 3:36 of the final period. Martin St. Louis had the primary assist on each of Purcell's goals.

The Lightning have won two straight following a seven-game winless streak (0-6-1).

Tom Wandell scored, and Lehtonen stopped 20 shots. The Stars are 1-4-1 in their last six.
