Paralympics end; 16 medals for Japan

LONDON — The 2012 Summer Paralympic Games concluded Sunday evening in London, the birthplace of organized sporting competition for disabled athletes.

The next Paralympics will be held in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Reuters quoted London Olympics chairman Sebastian Coe as telling a news conference Sunday, "We've had the most extraordinary summer of sport."

The Japanese team won 16 medals in total, five of them gold, during the 12-day event, falling short of the 27 medals it won in Beijing four years ago.
