Rangers hold off Sens in Game 7; Devils top Panthers in 2OT

NEW YORK — The New York Rangers are likely more relieved than ecstatic now that they have outlasted the pesky Ottawa Senators.

It wasn't easy, and after a home loss in Game 5, it almost wasn't likely. But the Eastern Conference's top-seeded team gutted out a big road win and then made it count Thursday night when the Rangers held off the Senators 2-1 in Game 7 to advance to the second round.

"You don't want to relax too much" said forward Derek Stepan, who had three points in the Rangers' Game 6 win and then helped set up the opening goal in the clincher. "We have a big round ahead of us and we have to make sure we stay focused and keep that emotion high."

Defensemen Marc Staal and Dan Girardi scored 4:18 apart in the second period, Henrik Lundqvist made 26 saves and the Rangers eliminated the eighth-seeded Senators — completing a rally from a 3-2 hole after losing Game 5.

"We were talking about it in Ottawa that if we could bring it back here, the fans would be behind us," Girardi said. "The way we play all year got us ready for games like this. We came with a great effort (in Ottawa) and another one tonight."

Staal broke the scoreless deadlock, and Girardi gave New York a 2-0 lead with his first career NHL playoff goal. Lundqvist allowed Daniel Alfredsson's power-play goal in the second but stood tall the rest of the way to send the Rangers into a second-round matchup with the seventh-seeded Washington Capitals.

New York hadn't hosted a Game 7 since their Stanley Cup victory over Vancouver in 1994, but it stayed perfect at home in deciding games — winning its fourth. The Rangers are 4-5 overall in Game 7, and the Senators dropped to 0-5.

"We knew they were going to come out strong," said Ottawa goalie Craig Anderson, who made 27 saves. "I just wanted to make sure that I gave my team an opportunity to win the hockey game — make the next save for the guys

"They had their fans. They had lots of energy."

Lundqvist withstood tons of pressure from the Senators, who spent most of the closing 5 minutes in New York's end. The win wasn't secure until Sergei Gonchar tripped Carl Hagelin as he skated toward the empty net with 36.2 seconds remaining.

SUNRISE, Florida — Adam Henrique scored his second goal of the game at 3:47 of the second overtime, and the New Jersey Devils beat the Florida Panthers 3-2 in Game 7 early Friday to advance to second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The Devils wasted a 2-0 lead in the third period, then recovered and earned a matchup with Philadelphia in the East semifinals. Stephen Gionta also scored in regulation for New Jersey, which won a series for the first time since 2007.

Martin Brodeur made 43 saves for the Devils in a game that ended on April 27 — the 20th anniversary of Brodeur's first playoff appearance for New Jersey.

Stephen Weiss and Marcel Goc scored third-period goals for the Panthers, and Jose Theodore made 32 saves. Florida made a surprising run to the Southeast Division title this season, earning their first postseason berth in 12 years.

Henrique picked up a loose puck in the right circle, skated toward the slot and beat Jose Theodore with a low shot. The Devils mobbed Henrique, as Theodore knelt on the ice in disbelief.

An hour earlier, all the momentum was going the other way. Down 2-0 entering the third period, Florida had no choice but to attack.

Marchand hits three; Bruins rout Panthers

BOSTON — The Santa hats came flying out of the stands to celebrate Brad Marchand's third goal of the game, and the Boston fans began taunting the Florida Panthers by chanting, "Merry Christmas!"

The defending Stanley Cup champions are heading into the holiday break the same way they started their summer: As the hottest team in hockey.

Marchand had his first career hat trick and a career-high five points to help Boston beat Florida 8-0 on Friday night, giving the Bruins their sixth consecutive victory and their most lopsided win of the season. Boston has won 20 of its last 23 games.

"Everyone's playing the same level as last year," Marchand said. "We need to keep it going the whole year. That's the goal right now."

Marchand scored a short-handed goal to start things off, assisted on Boston's fourth and fifth goals and then scored twice more in the third. After making it 8-0 midway through the third period, the sold-out crowd of 17,565 showered the ice with all kinds of headwear, including a fair number of Santa hats.

"You can't put into words how the last year and a half have gone," said Marchand, who was fighting to make the team during training camp in 2010 and wound up a key player on the NHL champions. "All the things kind of lined up, and it's been great."

Patrice Bergeron had a goal and two assists, and Tuukka Rask made 30 saves for Boston for his second straight shutout — a scoreless streak of 155 minutes, 10 seconds. The backup to Vezina and Conn Smythe Trophy winner Tim Thomas, Rask is 7-1-1 in his last eight starts.

"Lots of goals. It's good for the fans," Rask said. "You pretty much feel if you don't mess up you're going to be fine."

Milan Lucic, Benoit Pouliot, Dennis Seidenberg and Gregory Campbell also scored as Boston moved into the top spot in the Eastern Conference. The Bruins have four days off for Christmas before playing Phoenix on Wednesday.

Jose Theodore allowed four goals on 14 shots in the first period and was replaced by Scott Clemmensen. The former Boston College goalie made 17 saves the rest of the way.

"It was an old-fashioned butt kicking. There's really nothing to say," Panthers coach Kevin Dineen said. "I'm usually a glass-half-full guy, but there's nothing to say."

The Panthers were playing their third game in four nights, including a 4-3 overtime loss to Ottawa on Thursday. They have lost all three.

"It was a frustrating night," defenseman Ed Jovanovski said. "We've played a lot of road games and, not to make excuses, we're a pretty banged-up team right now. Now we have a couple of days off and hopefully we can rest up and get some guys back."

Devils 4, Capitals 3 (SO)

In Newark, New Jersey, Ilya Kovalchuk and Patrik Elias scored in the shootout and Martin Brodeur made an outstanding glove save on Alex Ovechkin as the Devils, after blowing a three-goal lead in the third period, regrouped to beat Washington.

Rangers 4, Flyers 2

In New York, Henrik Lundqvist made 28 saves in his second win over Philadelphia this season and rookie defenseman Stu Bickel had two more assists as the Rangers beat the Flyers to move into first place in the Atlantic Division.

Hurricanes 2, Senators 1 (OT)

In Raleigh, North Carolina, Tuomo Ruutu tipped in Jay Harrison's slap shot in overtime to lift the Hurricanes over Ottawa.

Andreas Nodl also scored and Cam Ward made 22 saves for Carolina, which won its first overtime game of the season. The Hurricanes outshot the Senators 38-23.

Maple Leafs 5, Islanders 3

In Uniondale, New York, Clarke MacArthur had a goal and an assist and James Reimer stopped 30 shots to lead Toronto past the Islanders.

Stars 6, Predators 3

In Dallas, Vernon Fiddler, Loui Eriksson and Steve Ott scored during a span of 3:05 in the first period and the Stars went on to beat Nashville.

Penguins 4, Jets 1

In Winnipeg, James Neal got the go-ahead goal 22 seconds into the third period and Pittsburgh scored twice more in the next 5 minutes.

Avalanche 2, Lightning 1 (OT)

In Denver, Matt Duchene scored late in overtime and Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 29 shots.

Blues 3, Coyotes 2

In Glendale, Arizona, Alexander Steen scored his team-leading 12th goal and Brian Elliott made 24 saves to help streaking St. Louis beat Phoenix.

Flames 3, Canucks 1

In Vancouver, Leland Irving made 29 saves for his first NHL victory in Calgary's win over the Canucks.

Sharks 2, Kings 1 (SO)

In San Jose, Ryane Clowe scored the lone shootout goal in the fourth round and Antti Niemi stopped Mike Richards to lead the Sharks past Los Angeles for their fourth straight win.

Logan Couture scored in regulation for San Jose, which matched its longest winning streak of the season following a stretch of five losses in six games. Niemi made 28 saves.
