San Jose loses ATP World Tour event

SAN JOSE, California — The 123-year-old ATP World Tour event in San Jose will move to Memphis in 2014, with the Memphis tournament being sold and shifted to Rio de Janeiro.

The ATP Board of Directors approved the sale of the Memphis membership this week to IMX for operation of the 500-level event in Brazil. The ATP will determine the calendar and format for the events in 2014 and 2015 later this year.

The SAP Open began as the Pacific Coast Championships in Monterey in 1889 and has been played indoors recently at the home of the NHL's San Jose Sharks in February before dwindling crowds.

Japan pulls out of skiing event

Oberstdorf, Germany — Japan pulled out of a Nordic combined World Cup team event Saturday after Yoshito Watabe suffered a fall in the ski jump.

The Japanese team of Yoshito and Akito Watabe, Yusuke Minato and Taihei Kato was sixth going into the cross country, due to start 1.6 seconds behind leader Austria.

Watabe, however, injured his knee after a jump of 122 meters, forcing Japan to withdraw.

Norway came from behind to win the 20-km cross country in 51 minutes, 36.7 seconds, one-tenth of a second ahead of Germany.

Sharapova to miss Brisbane event

BRISBANE, Australia — Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from the Brisbane International because of her continuing recovery from a left ankle injury.

Sharapova was hurt at the Pan Pacific Championships in Tokyo in September.

Sharapova told Brisbane tournament officials in a statement released Saturday that "unfortunately my ankle is not 100 percent and I won't be able to make it this year."

It would have been her first appearance at the Brisbane event, which begins Jan. 1.

She said the injury, which also forced her to withdraw from the China Open and later the WTA Championships in Istanbul after two losses, should not affect her chances of competing at the Australian Open, which she won in 2008 and which begins Jan. 16 in Melbourne.
