Real Impact wins Yasuda Kinen

Ninth-pick Real Impact pulled away down the final straight to win the Yasuda Kinen while favorite Apapane failed to live up to her billing on Sunday.

Real Impact, a 3-year-old colt ridden by jockey Keita Tosaki, stayed near the front of the main pack over a devastating pace before surging to cross the finish line a neck ahead of fifth-pick Strong Return, clocking 1 minute, 32 seconds in the 1,600-meter turf race at Tokyo Racecourse.

"He made a good start. I heard that he is good at controlling his race," Tosaki said. "It was a long way to the finish after we took the lead. He really did a great job."

Third place went to Smile Jack, the third favorite, another half a length back.

Apapane, who was looking to win her sixth Grade One race, timed 1:32.2, good enough for sixth.

Real Impact, sired by Deep Impact out of Tokio Reality, won his first Grade One race and earned ?100 million for the first prize. Tosaki also won his first Grade One race.
