Injured Villa rules self out of Euros
BARCELONA, Spain — Spain striker David Villa ruled himself out of the European Championship on Tuesday after failing to recover from a leg injury that forced him to miss much of the last season with Barcelona.While the decision was hardly a surprise, it still deals a blow to Spain's chances of defending the title as Villa played a key role in its runs to both the Euro 2008 and 2010 World Cup titles.Villa is Spain's all-time leading scorer but hasn't played since fracturing his left shin in December, and Barcelona said Tuesday that Villa will not be fit in time for Euro 2012.Barcelona said on its website that Villa made the decision himself "after not showing sufficient progress in his recovery in the last few training sessions."

Hanshin deactivates injured Johjima
OSAKA — Former Seattle Mariners catcher Kenji Johjima was deactivated by the Hanshin Tigers on Friday with sciatic nerve pain.According to the team, the 35-year-old Johjima has been increasingly bothered by numbness in his left hip area. There is no timetable for his return and the form of treatment has yet to be decided.This season, Johjima was converted to first base because of pain in his right elbow but has often been on the bench. He has batted a paltry .179 in 24 games without a single homer.

Referee injured in fall; Hakuho wins
Mongolian yokozuna Hakuho made short work of Okinoumi, but Japanese ozeki pair Kotoshogiku and Kisenosato both tasted defeat at the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament on Wednesday.The scariest moment of the day, however, was when gyoji (referee) Shozaburo Kimura took a nasty spill in ozeki Baruto's bout against Wakakoyu and was left unconscious at ringside before he had to be carted out of the auditorium on a stretcher by sumo officials.After the bizarre accident which left sumo fans with looks of concerned silence, Hakuho remained in a share of the lead at 4-0 with ozeki trio Kotooshu, Baruto and Harumafuji, as well as sekiwake Kakuryu and maegashira Asasekiryu.Kotoshogiku had one false start against Aminishiki (1-3) and flubbed his lines on the second asking as he was sent backpedaling from the ring to his second loss while Kisenosato never got rolling in his bout with Toyonoshima (2-2), the sekiwake deftly darting about the ring before shoving the ozeki to a first loss at Ryogoku Kokugikan.Hakuho, who is seeking his third straight title and 22nd overall, was business as usual with Okinoumi, dragging the winless No. 2 maegashira to the dirt surface after one strike."This has never happened before in sumo. I guess things like this can happen," said Hakuho, referring to referee Shozaburo, who later was revealed to have suffered a concussion. "I hope he is okay. He is a referee from my stable's group. I wasn't influenced by that, though, because I have to perform my best for the fans," he said.Baruto came charging out of the crouch and knocked winless Wakakoyu on top of Shozaburo, who appeared to hit his head after falling from the raised ring.Kotooshu knocked the daylights out of Goeido (0-4), the Bulgarian ozeki using his longer arms effectively in a flurry of thrusts to send his opponent sprawling in seconds.

Injured Saito may be out for month
Sapporo — The Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters' Yuki Saito may need a month before returning to the rotation after the 22-year-old right-hander was diagnosed with a left abdominal strain on Monday.An MRI revealed that the injury is expected to shelve Saito for two to three weeks, but according to chief trainer Yoshihiro Fukushima, the heralded rookie could be out longer."It's not as light as we thought it would be," Fukushima said."I want to be back as soon as possible," said Saito, who traveled with the team to Sendai for a three-game series against the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles starting Tuesday."I can only do what I can right now, which is to try to get fit again."Saito was taken out of Sunday's game against the Softbank Hawks after pitching one scoreless inning, when he complained of pain down his left side.Saito is 2-0 in four starts this season for the first-place Fighters. Manager Masataka Nashida said Saito will make a rehab start in the minors before returning to the rotation.
