Santa Clara, California — Michael Phelps has found a new event to dominate, easily winning the 200-meter backstroke Saturday night at the Santa Clara International Grand Prix after rival Ryan Lochte was a healthy scratch.The 14-time Olympic gold medalist led the entire way and touched the wall more than 3 seconds ahead of the competition at 1 minute, 57.05 seconds. Mitchell Larkin was second and Matthew Swanston third.The event wasn't part of Phelps' record haul of eight gold medals in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It's one of the changes Phelps is considering to his schedule ahead of next year's London Games.Lochte was a late scratch for the final because he was competing in the 400 individual medley just before. He was second behind Brazil's Thiago Pereira in that event.

Irie claims backstroke double
OSAKA — In-form Ryosuke Irie completed a men's backstroke double Saturday with a commanding victory in the 200 meters at the Japan Open.Irie, who won the 100 on Friday, clocked 1 minute, 54.55 seconds to easily beat Kazuki Watanabe, who finished over three seconds back in second place. Yuki Shirai was third in 1:58.77.Yuya Horihata won the men's 400-meter individual medley in 4:12.96 while Shiho Sakai prevailed in the women's 200 backstroke in 2:08.38.Fourteen-year-old Kanako Watanabe took the women's 50 breaststroke title in 31.83. She has now set the fastest time ever by a junior high school swimmer in both the 100- and 50-meter disciplines here.
