Irie claims backstroke double

OSAKA — In-form Ryosuke Irie completed a men's backstroke double Saturday with a commanding victory in the 200 meters at the Japan Open.

Irie, who won the 100 on Friday, clocked 1 minute, 54.55 seconds to easily beat Kazuki Watanabe, who finished over three seconds back in second place. Yuki Shirai was third in 1:58.77.

Yuya Horihata won the men's 400-meter individual medley in 4:12.96 while Shiho Sakai prevailed in the women's 200 backstroke in 2:08.38.

Fourteen-year-old Kanako Watanabe took the women's 50 breaststroke title in 31.83. She has now set the fastest time ever by a junior high school swimmer in both the 100- and 50-meter disciplines here.
